How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs

How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs

Its in the middle of the night, and you are awakened by the very thing you have been fearing. Bed Bugs. I hear this story often and often I wake up to emails from people who have been awake all night scouring the web for a solution to getting rid of Bed Bugs. The sad truth is, normally by this point, the infestation is much larger and has already taken hold in areas of the room or house you won't be able to get to. You will likely need to call a professional pest control operator. The information here will get you started in the suppression stage. The pest control company will help you with the elimination part. I hope to set your mind to ease, just a little so you can get back to a normal life and start sleeping good once again.

The first thing I tell people is don't panic. Bed Bugs have an uncanny ability to take over every thought in your head. They have already moved in to your house, don't let them move in to you head!

You will want to start by stripping your bed linens carefully without flinging Bed Bugs or their eggs everywhere. Put the linens directly in the laundry on the hottest setting for both the wash and dry. If you cannot wash on hot, at least use the hot setting for drying. Closely inspect the mattress, bed frame, head board, and surrounding areas for any activity. Clean and vacuum as much as possible all surfaces including cracks and crevices. Dump or discard your vacuum contents out doors directly in a trash bag and seal the bag well for removal.

At this point, you will want to get your hands on a good mattress encasement. You will need 2 encasements - one for the mattress and one for the box springs. I recommend the Mattress Safe brand. Fully enclose your mattress and box springs. Mattress encasements will keep bugs from getting in or out of your mattress and box springs. You should now get your hands on some Diatomaceous Earth. You will want the food grade D.E. Diatomaceous Earth or D.E. is not a chemical or poison but rather made from Diatoms usually harvested from fresh water sources. The D.E. acts as an irritant and scratches the exoskeleton of the Bed Bug which promotes dehydration causing death. Most hardware stores or home centers will carry D.E. in the lawn and garden section.

At this point, you might feel confidant in your efforts; and you should. Its important however that you don't become over confidant and become complacent. You have suppressed the Bed Bugs. I am a firm believer that there is not one single €silver bullet€ when it comes to battling Bed Bugs. It is a battle that requires multiple methods to be successful. Diligence and paying attention to the details will always be the key to a successful treatment. You should at the very least contact your pest control specialist and get the opinion of a professional.

If you are in the Kansas City Area, contact us and we will be happy to do a free inspection and evaluation of your home. For a complete elimination of Bed Bugs, we recommend using Thermal Remediation or heat to treat the home. Heat treating is the best possible treatment at this time.

The Bed Bugs are sensitive to heat above 115 degrees and all stages including the eggs will parish with heat. The interesting part is when the heated area reaches approximately 100 degrees, the Bed Bugs are drawn towards the heat. Their instincts tell them that a blood meal is nearby at those temperatures. Once they are drawn in, the temperature continues to rise and the heat will soak in to every crack and crevice and rise to the lethal point. There is nowhere to hide with the heat.

Your efforts will be rewarded as getting rid of Bed Bugs requires everyone to roll up their sleeves and get to work. Everyone needs to participate to ensure a successful elimination of Bed Bugs. This is not the time for finger pointing or playing the blame game with ones around you who might have caused the infestation. We will guide you every step of the way and we will bring in the heating system or the €big guns€ to help finish them off!
