- 1). Check receipts from the company in question. As EINs are not protected in the way that Social Security numbers are, many businesses simply put their EIN on receipts and other business-related documents.
- 2). Call your employer's accounting department if you are an employee. The payroll department also should be able to give you the company's EIN.
- 3). Check your purchase orders, check stubs or 1099s if you are a contractor. The purchase orders and check stubs might have the EIN, and the 1099 is highly likely to have the EIN listed since the 1099 is a tax document.
- 4). Type the company name and "EIN" into an online search engine. Many company websites will have the EIN listed, and the search engine should show a result. You also might be able to locate the EIN on a website that has public filings (such as records for 401Ks), on local business development office sites or other business-related websites. You might not even need to actually visit a website; often, the search results will list a company's EIN. For example, a search engine search for "Proctor and Gamble EIN" produced 31-0411980 as the EIN in the search results.
- 5). Visit your local library and ask the reference librarian about databases to locate EINs. Public libraries often have access to paid databases (such as LexisNexis or Reference USA).
- 6). Find the EIN in a free database. These include: Guidestar.org for nonprofit groups; the Securities and Exchange Commission's Electronic Data Gathering and Retrieval (EDGAR) system for public companies; and Brightscope.com for companies with pension plans. Visit a site and enter the company name in the search field.
