- 1). Clean the furniture with sponge and a TSP solution. Dilute the TSP in the proportion of water recommended in the manufacturer's instructions. Allow to dry.
- 2). Sand the item lightly with 150 grit sandpaper, until the veneer finish is dulled. Don't sand too hard or you will damage the thin veneer surface. Clean or brush off any sanding dust that remains on the furniture.
- 3). Paint the piece with water-based primer using a fine bristle brush. Use the 1-inch brush for detailed or small items. For larger items, such as shelving units or tables, use a 2-inch brush. Apply the primer using even, parallel brush strokes for the smoothest finish. Allow the furniture to dry for a few hours.
- 4). Sand the furniture lightly with 220 grit sandpaper. Wipe off the dust and paint your first coat, applying the paint in even, parallel strokes. Allow to dry thoroughly.
- 5). Sand lightly with 220 grit sandpaper. A light sanding makes a big difference in the smoothness of the painted surface. Apply your second coat of paint. Allow the paint to dry overnight before using the furniture. If you are placing heavy objects on the furniture, allow it to dry for a few days so the paint hardens before placing such items as books on it.
