Ladies and gentlemen, set your alarm clocks, the Hoff-Phelps-Lochte show begins at 9 a.m. Saturday. Olympians Katie Hoff (Towson, Md.) Michael Phelps (Baltimore, Md.) and Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.) will each compete in three individual event finals tomorrow in the second morning of finals at the Eric Namesnik Memorial Grand Prix Swim Meet in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Olympic gold-medalists Phelps and Lochte will face off in the 100m backstroke tomorrow.
Phelps will also swim the 100m fly and 200m free, an event in which he is the reigning world record-holder. Lochte will round out his morning with the 100m breaststroke and the 400m IM. Hoff will be the featured finalist on the women’s side, competing in the 100m fly, 200m free and 100m breaststroke.
Lochte swam a time of 4:29.48 in the 400 IM to advance as the top seed in an event that went off without the participation of world record-holder Phelps. The second seed went to Poseidon Swimming’s Tyler Harris (4:29.90) and Keith Beavers was third in 4:30.12. National teamers Robert Margalis (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Erik Vendt (North Easton, Mass.) also advanced as the number five and six seeds.
In the women’s event, Elizabeth Beisel (Saunderstown, R.I.) claimed her second top seed in as many days, posting a time of 4:53.24. Beisel took the bronze medal in the 200 IM in this morning’s finals. Also advancing were number two seed Kaitlin O’Brien (4:54.16) and Alexa Komarncky (4:56.16). Pan Ams-bound Ava Ohlgren (Northville, Mich.) earned the fifth seed in 4:56.23.
World record-holder Hoff did not swim the event.
Three 100-meter distances were contested tonight, beginning with the 100m butterfly.
Moving ahead as the top seed in the women’s event was U.S. Junior Team member Felicia Lee (Towson, Md.) in 1:00.37. Jemma Lowe took the second seed in a time of 1:01.12 and world championship silver-medalist Kim Vandenberg (Moraga, Calif.) advanced in the third spot with a time of 1:01.96. Also headed to the “A” final are Worlds competitors Hoff, who was fourth in 1:02.25, and Mary DeScenza (Naperville, Ill.) who was fifth in 1:02.30.
In the men’s 100m fly, World Championship teammates Phelps and Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn.) claimed the top two placements. Phelps’ edged Tarwater (55.65) with a time of 55.52. Club Wolverine swept the top three spots as Chris Brady (Wilmington, Del.) claimed the third seed with a time of 56.19. A pair of World University Games swimmers also advanced to the championship final as Joseph Doyle (Columbus, Ohio) touched in 56.51 for fourth, and Peter Verhoef (Newport News, Va.) posted a time of 56.71, for fifth-place.
Phelps and Tarwater also both advanced in the 200m freestyle. Phelps topped the afternoon session with a time of 1:51.43, while Tarwater took the eighth seed in 1:54.75. Rounding out an impressive field are Daniel Madwed (1:51.83), Matt Owen (1:53.16), Peter Vanderkaay (1:53.19), Robert Margalis (1:54.69) Chris DeJong (1:53.26) and Matt Patton (1:54.72).
A three-time winner from this morning’s finals (400 Free, 200 IM, 400 Free Relay), Kaitlin Sandeno (Lake Forest, Calif.) advanced as the top see in the 200m freestyle with a time of 2:04.13. Just .34 seconds behind, DeScenza claimed the second spot, in 2:04.47, and Northwestern University’s Andrea Hupman was third in 2:04.69. Vandenberg advanced in the sixth spot in 2:05.22 and Pan Am Games swimmer Caroline Burckle (Louisville, Ky.) took the seventh seed in 2:05.27.
The women’s 100m breaststroke also saw Hoff (1:13.05) and Buckle (1:13.38) advance to championship finals as the fourth and sixth seeds respectively. Lowri Tynan of Wales was the top finisher, with a time of 1:11.68.
In the 100m backstroke, Lee took the top spot in 1:03.56 while Hoff was the second seed with a time of 1:03.67. Beisel (1:04.47) and DeScenza (1:04.50) took spots four and five respectively. Sandeno moved forward in eighth position with a time of 1:05.05.
The men’s backstroke qualified Phelps (56.73) and Lochte (58.29) who took the first and third positions entering finals. In second was Roland Rudolf, with a time of 57.60. In the 100m breaststroke, Lochte advanced as the second seed (1:05.87) behind Athens Bulldog’s Neil Versfeld who touched in 1:04.77. Indiana University’s Pat Penoyar advanced as the third seed in 1:06.05.
Finals will begin at 9 a.m. tomorrow with competition in the 400m IM, 100m Fly, 200m Free, 100m Breast, 100m Back and 400m Medley Relay.
