Hamstring injuries - an Overview

Most of the hamstring injuries occur during strenuous and excessive physical work or activity. High speed sprinting is one of the major reasons for hamstring injuries in sportsmen. Also excessive strain or loading on any body area or muscle might automatically lead to hamstring injuries. Most of the athletes involved in stress involving martial arts and other pushing sports like hockey and soccer might be at a risk of receiving hamstring injuries. These injuries might also re-occur in individuals with muscles and ligaments with previous injury records. In many instances an injury might occur at a point which lies adjoining a previous injury spot or at the same location of a previous injury. Such hamstring strain injuries require high quality care and resting days. In many cases due to injury to a tendon a person might experience severe pain in the injured area. In such cases a patient might be unable to carry on much physical activity and require immediate medication.

Injuries which involve intramuscular tendon and adjoining muscles can be cured and require a lesser rehabilitation time period with respect to injuries involving proximal tendons. All such injuries involving biceps and tendons and arising due to high speed training and workouts need proper attention and care. In many cases of extreme injury to hip flexor muscles a person might require to undergo surgery for fast recovery. The time duration for injury recovery thus depends on the severity of an injury and the area under strain. With every extreme case of serious injury the rehabilitation time might get extended. At every stage of injury a complete estimate of the time for recovery or its re-occurrence is sometimes difficult to predict. It is therefore very important to cure every simple and extreme injury case on a priority basis and take precautions to avoid a reoccurrence.
