- Oregon State, 90 miles south of Portland in the small city of Corvallis, is the state's largest public research university. As of 2011, it has an enrollment of 24,000 students from throughout the United States and over 100 other countries. Areas of study include business, education, engineering, agriculture, forestry, health, liberal arts, oceanic sciences, pharmacy and veterinary medicine. Oregon State awards undergraduate and graduate degrees in all of these areas. Its graduate certificates cover geographic information science, fisheries management, marine resource management, health policy, sustainable natural resources and water conflict management.
- Reed is a coeducational liberal arts college on a wooded campus approximately 15 minutes from downtown Portland. As of 2011, it has around 1,400 students, a 10-to-1 student-faculty ratio and an average class size of 15. Academics at Reed are divided into arts; history and social sciences; literature and languages; mathematics and natural sciences; and philosophy, religion, psychology and linguistics. The college also emphasizes interdisciplinary education with dual-degree programs as well as a Master of Arts in liberal studies.
- The University of Oregon is in Eugene, with an additional campus in the Portland area. Founded in 1876, it offers over 260 academic programs in the fields of arts and sciences, architecture and allied arts, business, education, journalism and communication, music and dance, and law. The University of Oregon awards Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral degrees. It also offers summer courses for admitted and non-admitted students, as well as distance education and academic extension programs in professional development.
- The Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA), in Portland, offers Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in communication design, contemporary animated arts, illustration, intermedia, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture. It also offers Master of Fine Arts degrees in visual studies, collaborative design, and applied craft and design. Continuing education programs for adults, teenagers and children are also available. PNCA provides students with opportunities to travel and participate in professional art exhibitions.
- The Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT) sits in the rural city of Klamath Falls, with a second campus in Portland. OIT offers undergraduate degree programs in management, engineering, environmental science, biology, communications, information technology, mathematics, applied psychology and health-related fields. It also has pre-professional programs in medicine, pharmacy and physical therapy, as well as a graduate program in manufacturing engineering technology.
