- 1). Insert a small flat stick perpendicular all the way into the bottom of the dado intended for the spline. Make a mark on the stick with a pencil at the point where it enters the dado.
- 2). Measure the depth of the dado by measuring the mark on the stick. For example: if the mark on the stick measures a 1/2 inch which is typical, then your spline width will be 1 inch because the spline will extend a 1/2 inch into two separate pieces of wood.
- 3). Place a push stick on the right side of the table saw fence within arm's reach. Set the table saw fence at 1 inch from the blade to the fence. Raise the blade to 1 inch from the tip of the highest tooth, to the point where the blade emerges from the table.
- 4). Lay the plywood down behind the blade against the fence. Turn on the saw. Push the plywood into the blade with your right hand. Hold pressure against the plywood with your left hand to keep it tight against the fence.
- 5). Stop pushing when your right hand is within 12 inches of the blade. Reach over and pick up the push stick. Hook the end of the push stick directly behind the spline being cut. The push stick should be within a 1/2 inch of the fence.
- 6). Push the remaining 12 inches of the plywood through the saw blade and continue pushing for another 6 inches past the blade and stop. Turn off the saw. Measure the length of the dado. Cut the spline to length on a miter saw.
