- 1). Decide whether or not you wish to include the name of the deceased parent on the invitation. Some couples may choose to honor the deceased parent by including the name while others will include the name of the surviving parent only. Whether there is a surviving parent and whether or not that parent has remarried will also affect your wording decision.
- 2). If the father is deceased and the mother has not remarried, refer to the mother as Mrs. John Doe in the invitation. If you are not including the name of the late father in the invitation, then continue to word the invitation as you would have in any other case.
- 3). If the mother is deceased and the father has not remarried refer to him as Mr. John Doe and continue wording the invitation as usual if you are not including the mother's name.
- 4). If you wish to include the name of the deceased parent, word your invitation as though the bride and groom are hosting and include the word "late" in front of the deceased parent's name. For example:
Susan Doe
Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Doe
and Jason Smith
Son of Mr. Bill Smith and the Late Mrs. Smith
request the honor of your presence.... - 5). If the surviving parent has remarried, word your invitation as above including the name of the remarried parent and the late parent.
Susan Doe
Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Reginald Carter
and the late Mr. John Doe
and Jason Smith....
