Nov. 13, 2002 -- The first defibrillator approved for use at home should be available in some drugstores early next year. The FDA has approved the Philips Electronics' HeartStart Home Defibrillator.
Defibrillators are used to shock the heart to restore its normal beat when someone has gone into sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), which kills about 250,000 Americans every year. The American Red Cross says a quarter of those deaths could be prevented with immediate defibrillator use. Emergency treatment for SCA with CPR and a defibrillator must begin within minutes to raise chances of survival.
Philips says the HeartStart has the same technology as its professional-grade defibrillators but with features that make it easy to learn and use, including audio instructions that are more comprehensive.
The HeartStart will be available by prescription at some CVS stores beginning early next year, the company says. It has a list price of $2,295.
