The 1960s are known for hippies, the 1970s for disco and the 1980s for hair-metal, but the 1990s doesn't necessarily have a signature style. However, the mix of different styles and ideas may be what the decade is most known for. Grunge was one popular style through 1994. There were many popular TV shows, like "Seinfeld" and "Friends", and movies like "Titanic" and "Scream". Taking inspiration from many aspects of the 1990s will make your '90s theme party a blast. - In the early 1990s, grunge music (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden) was huge, as was the style of clothing that went with it. Have guests wear flannel shirts, ripped jeans, dirty tennis shoes and other items that represent the grungy period of the 1990s. As an event, consider karaoke with only grunge bands on the playlist.
- There was no bigger TV show in the '90s than "Seinfeld". To host a '90s-themed "Seinfeld" party, invite guests to come dressed as a favorite character. Serve foods from different episodes of the nine seasons, such as marble rye, black-and-white cookies, Fusilli pasta, fried chicken (labeled Kenny Roger's Chicken Shack) and soups featured on the Soup Nazi episodes. Activities could include "Seinfeld" trivia, best "Seinfeld" character costume contests and a bad-dance contest to mimic Elaine's dancing from the show.
- Although inline skates were originally developed for ice skaters to train in the summer (and ballet artists to train all year), they were widely popularized in the 1990s by the Rollerblade company. Host a 1990s themed party at a skating rink, where everyone must wear in-line skates (available for rent at most skating rinks). Play songs from the 1990s for guests to skate along with.
- "Titanic", the second-highest grossing film of all time, came out in 1997, making it a perfect candidate for a '90s party theme. "Scream" was another hit movie from the decade and could give a Halloween party a '90s flare. However, you don't have to stick with one movie from the '90s. Instead, try having a complete 1990s movie theme party. Invite guests to dress up as stars from their 1990s films, such as Keanu Reeves in "The Matrix", from 1999, or in "Speed", from 1994. A couple could come dressed as Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman (who were still married in the 90s). Have movies playing in the background of your party and have events like movie-soundtrack karaoke, including the song "My Heart Will Go On" from "Titanic".
- There’s no need to settle on one typical 1990s event or memory when you’re planning a ‘90s themed party. Instead, tell guests to come dressed as anything from the ‘90s, including TV characters, President Clinton, OJ Simpson and other memorable people. Play all types of music that was big in the 1990s, including boy bands, grunge and ska (which was popular for a year or two in the mid-’90s).
