A lot of people buy a dartboard and place it on their wall, usually either in their bedroom or in the garage, and then find that they will often miss the dartboard completely.
This is particularly common when throwing for a double, and even more experienced players such as myself miss the board completely on occasions.
That's why you need to protect your wall because otherwise you are left with lots of unsightly holes.
There are basically three ways you can do this.
The most effective way is to buy a dartboard surround.
These are designed for this very purpose.
You simply place them around your dartboard and because they are several inches wide, they will easily absorb any errant throws.
The material used is designed to close in on itself so any time you do throw a dart into this surround, it will close in on itself and eradicate any holes in no time at all.
So it's basically the perfect solution.
Another way you can protect your wall is by using a dartboard cabinet.
These cabinets fit around your existing dartboard, and will also give you the added benefit of being able to keep score because they often come with scoreboards on each side.
They are generally made of wood so they will easily absorb any off-target throws.
The only drawback is that any holes that you make will remain visible.
The final solution is one for the cheapskate because it basically involves placing some cardboard behind the dartboard.
This does obviously work because providing the cardboard is big enough, any loose darts will hit the cardboard and not your wall.
The trouble is that you are left with an unattractive piece of cardboard with lots of holes in it hanging on your wall.
That's why I personally believe it's best to spend a little bit of money and invest in a dartboard surround or a cabinet.
Both of these do a great job of protecting your wall and they are a lot more pleasing to the eye as well.
Whichever option you choose, it's important that you don't just hang a dartboard up by itself because even decent players miss the board completely on occasions due to a lack of concentration.
It's often the double 3 and the other doubles at the bottom of the board that will cause you to fall short and land one in the wall, so it's always worth having some protection in place, even if it is just a piece of cardboard.
