- 1). Plant the watermelon seeds two weeks after the last frost. These plants are fairly delicate and cannot stand up to cold weather.
- 2). Plant your watermelon seeds in sandy, loamy soil. Mulch can be used to amend soil that is high in clay. Watermelon requires full sun.
- 3). Plant the watermelon seeds 1 inch deep, with 6 feet of space between them and 7 to 10 feet between each row. Watermelon vines need a great deal of space.
- 4). Weed the watermelon beds aggressively, especially when they are first beginning to grow. Weeds will compete with your watermelons for water and nutrients, and this can cause the new plants to die off.
- 5). Fertilize the watermelon plants regularly with a fertilizer that is high in nitrogen until you see flowers. After that, switch over to a fertilizer that contains phosphorous and potassium.
- 6). Water the watermelon plants regularly. Ideally, the soil will be moist at all times.
