- 1). Put on safety glasses, ear protection and work gloves. Decide on an area of the fruit tree to create the girdle, which can be anywhere on the trunk from the surface of the ground to the bottom of the canopy. The lower sections of the trunk are easier to access and affect the tree roots quicker.
- 2). Turn on the chain saw and place it against the fruit tree trunk. Cut a groove or notch into the trunk at least 1/2 inch deep; on small trees this should be deep enough to see white-colored bark. If the trunk is thick, you may need to cut as deep as 1 1/2 inches to reach the white part. Continue the cut in a circle all the way around the trunk until you reach the starting location. This interrupts the flow of sap between the roots and crown of the tree.
- 3). Fill a garden sprayer with a water-soluble herbicide, such as glyphosate, and mix it with water as instructed. Close the sprayer up and shake it until the herbicide thoroughly is mixed.
- 4). Spray the cut area of the fruit tree trunk with the herbicide until it is saturated. Avoid getting the spray on surrounding vegetation or grass, as it will kill them as well.
