- 1). Purchase the correct type of film. Years ago, it was difficult to take pictures of lights because the films weren't sensitive enough. Presently, there are excellent color films for high-speed photography. Look for a film with an ISO (film's sensitivity to light) of 800. According to nyip.com, most digital cameras have settings that include ISO of 400, 800 and higher.
- 2). Turn off your flash. Nyip.com says that a vital step in getting good pictures of lights is to turn off your flash. The flash feature on cameras helps to create light in dark situations. Since you are photographing lights already, most of the time the flash is not necessary.
- 3). Mount your camera on a tripod. Since the flash will be off during photography, you will need a slow shutter speed. The best way to work with this speed is to mount your camera in such a way that will eliminate any source of movement.
- 4). Take pictures from different angles, especially if it is during twilight. If you want your picture to show some of the natural lighting of the sky in the background, position yourself so that the light of the sky is behind the lights. If you want simply the stadium lights, move so that the background is as dark as possible.
