I am sometimes asked (sorry guys, but I've never been asked this by a woman), why in the world should you want more than an hour's coverage on your wedding day, and why are photographers so damned expensive? These questions crop up at every wedding fayre so I thought I'd answer them here.
In a handy kind of way the answer is the same for them both.
In short: After your wedding, when it's all over, the only things you have left of the day are your memories, and the photographs.
In this article I'm only going to address the first question: Why do you want more than an hour's coverage? Well, it depends on how much of your day you want to remember.
I understand why people ask this; if you're not someone who regularly goes to weddings there's a whole load of things you'll not think about in the early planning stages.
So, might you want recording for posterity? Bridal preparations The wedding car The bride arriving at the church The ceremony Some formal pictures of all your guests A few nice pictures of the two of you together The reception venue & wedding breakfast hall After dinner speeches Cutting the cake Your first dance Well that covers anywhere from 8 - 10 hours for all of the above.
It's a whole day, and it goes in the blink of an eye.
It will probably feel like an hour, but all of that, all the people and the fun, and the togetherness of your day? It happens in about ten hours, and it only happens once.
It will be a wonderful day no matter what, and some people do only want an hour of coverage.
But as a generalisation, most people want a bit more, because they want to remember more, and that's why wedding package options are usually 5 hours and upwards.
If you're not fussed about having a first dance, or don't want your morning covered then 5 hours is probably about right, but if you want both including then it's a full day package that you'll need.
I can't recount the times I've taken pictures round to a couple afterwards and they have commented 'gosh I'd forgotten that!' or even that they hadn't noticed something at all.
Your photographer will see things from their own point of view and may well shoot things you yourself never spotted.
So why in the world would you need more than an hour's coverage? To help you remember the wonderful day when the two of you got married.
So that in twenty or thirty years time you can pick up your wedding album and relive the happiest day of your life.
So that your children and grandchildren will know what it was like for you both, and know that you were smoking hot when you got married too!
In a handy kind of way the answer is the same for them both.
