- 1). Check the circuit breaker for a tripped switch if the air conditioner is not working at all. If a switch has tripped, reset it and check the unit to see if it works. If it still isn't blowing out air, continue troubleshooting.
- 2). Look at the vents in the house and open any that are closed. Look at the air return vent and change out the filters for new ones if they are dirty. Air systems do not operate properly when air flow is restricted.
- 3). Check the outside unit to see if the slats in the box are clogged with dust, pollen and other debris. If they are, clear them and remove any shrubs or other plants that are too close to the unit. Leave a 1-and-1/2-foot clearance between it and vegetation.
- 4). Turn the fan to "On" and adjust the air setting to a high temperature, such as 90 degrees, so that the air system will not run --- if the setting is higher than the inside temperature, only the fan will be in operation. Hold your hand up to the vents to feel if air is blowing out from the fan. If so, then there is no issue with the fan motor. If not, then you might need a service call to replace the motor. Leave the fan on if it is running, so that you can check the duct work.
- 5). Go to the crawl space or attic area where the duct works are located. Run your hand over the ducts to see if you feel air coming out. If you do, this indicates a leak. Wrap duct tape around the duct pipe to seal the leak. Make sure to wrap the tape out several inches on either side of the leak to completely seal it.
- 6). Turn the air conditioner back down to a lower temperature setting, such as 60 degrees, so that it is set lower than the actual inside temperature. The system should come on. If it doesn't, then you will need to have the system checked by a professional.
If the system does come on, then air flow is the issue. Air conditioners freeze up when the air flow is hindered. Check it several times during the next hour, while it is running, to make sure that it is still putting out cold air. If it freezes up again --- and you have taken care of any outer issues that could cause it to freeze --- then the problem is the freon level. You will need a certified serviceman to recharge the unit.
