Digging Holes With a Digger Derrick!

The best part about working with a digger derrick truck is the convenience of doing the entire job at once without needing any other equipment or manpower. It is truly an all-inclusive utility vehicle depending on how it is equipped; it can reduce expenses and manpower required to complete any job. As with the use of any industrial equipment, there are certain important safety protocols which must be followed in order to properly operate the vehicle without causing damage or injury.

Auger

The auger on a digger derrick is controlled by the same panel that operates the boom arm and everything else. Having a good command of such controls along with the ability for simultaneous operation is critical as to how well this attachment performs. Since both the boom and its extension affect how efficiently and safely the auger works, it is important to be well-versed in the use of digger derrick trucks.

Boom

When beginning a job, booms should be set to a half-extended position in order to maintain stability of the boom arm. The auger should be hung immediately over the spot to be drilled and then slowly lowered directly downward, avoiding any wavering or angling of the bit. If the auger digs at an angle, there is a risk of bending both the digger shaft and the extension arm shaft, especially if the machine begins to corkscrew and spiral as it digs. The damage that caused to a unit could be serious if allowed to happen.

Excavation

Once the auger has been correctly positioned, the actual excavation process can begin. With the digger straight, steady pressure can be applied downward on the auger as it begins turning, pushing it slowly into the ground to aid the process. If the bit moves in any way, expert use of the boom control can allow for adjustment to follow any slight movement and keep an auger straight. If the fluctuation should worsen, rather than adjusting with any manipulation of the extension arm, it is best to back the auger up, get it out of the ground and try again.

Precautions

The excavation of holes with an auger on a digger derrick takes some practice in order to become efficient. In addition to the careful and detailed use of the extension arm, there are a number of other precautions that should be taken when using one of these mighty vehicles such as stabilizing the unit itself with outriggers and storing the auger after use.

Since the auger basically hangs from a rotating joint at the end of the boom arm, getting it out or stowing it away must be done with extreme caution. It is very easy for anyone on the ground to be injured during this action, so it is very important for those not operating the vehicle to be well out of its way. The boom should be retracted all the way back in and the control set to its slowest speed. Before doing anything else, the auger wind-up cable should be attached. Once the cable is secure, an operator can slowly begin rotating the auger, allowing the cable to pull it up against the boom in the stowed position. Until everything is locked into place, no one should be allowed near the vehicle for personal safety reasons.

Digger derrick trucks are incredibly versatile industrial machines that can save time, energy, and money when operated by trained individuals. Used safely, correctly and in accordance with OSHA and ANSI standards, these vehicles can safely dig holes and be an invaluable part of any work fleet!
