Ensure the truck bed is grit-free and clean. Next, use rough-graded sandpaper and sand down the existing paint. This will allow the new paint to stick to the truck bed. - or Not to Rust
Smooth any rust spots with sandpaper and apply rust treatment. Treatments are available in most body shops and include step-by-step instructions. - Truck Base Paint
After sanding and rust removal, apply the primer. Sand the primer with a lower-grit sandpaper than you used for the initial sanding. Next, apply the bed paint, using a brush, roller or spray. You may need to apply extra coats, especially with lower-price paints.
