- 1). Choose stakes that are tall enough to allow the shade cloth to be held at least 2 feet over the plants.
- 2). Use the mallet to pound the stakes into the four corners of the planting area and two, adjacent to one another, at the midway point along the longest sides.
- 3). Attach the shade cloth with a washer and a screw on top of each stake. This will help keep the shade cloth in place during windy weather.
- 4). Staple the cloth to each stake, pulling it taut as you go.
- 5). Use recycled materials for shade cloth, if you like. Old sheer curtains, window screens, or lattice will work as well as purchased shade cloth.
