- 1). Examine the areas around your swimming pool's filter and pump very carefully. These areas are commonly prone to leaks. Accumulated wetness near the filter, pump or connections can indicate a leak.
- 2). Turn on your pool pump. If you see some wetness but can't decide if it's a leak or not, turn on the pump and watch it in motion for several minutes. Signs of excessive moisture or dripping water point to a pool leak.
- 3). Use a dye test if you can't find the leak around the pump, filter, heater or other connections. Add a few drops of a dark dye to your swimming pool water where you think it might be leaking. Perform the test in places near to the pump or the filter first if you're not sure where the leak is, or anywhere else where the pool wall is not constant. Continue adding drops of dye to the water until you see the dye stream out of the pool. The area where the dye disappeared is the location of the leak.
- 4). Patch the leak with a patch kit, commonly available at pool supply stores. Cut out a circular patch from the material provided by the kit and cover it with glue. Fold the circle in half and venture underwater to patch the leak. Once you are at the location of the leak, quickly open the circle and place it securely onto the leak. Hold it in place for several minutes to ensure that it sets.
