A Stable Tooth Care Program Always Begins At Home

The ideal role of your dentist is as a preventive measure to help you maintain strong teeth that are always in good condition. How you achieve healthy teeth and gums is something you should be concerned with. Your daily tooth care habits that you do at home are bigger factors into your oral health condition than anything else. For good or bad, it is completely up to you to figure out what you need to know and to develop the proper habits that you need to have if you want to be able to take good care of your teeth. A proper and effective tooth and gum care program is made up of three important factors. Brushing twice a day, flossing once a day and visiting the dentist at least every six months. It is also important to make sure that your techniques for brushing and flossing are as effective as possible.

Do you know the difference between tooth plaque and tartar? Plaque is what happens when bacteria sets in along your gum line. If you cannot remove the plaque completely it will harden and turn into tartar. Because tartar is more advanced, it is harder to get rid of by brushing. Worst of all, tartar does a lot more damage to your teeth.

Use a strong toothpaste that was made with anti-tartar ingredients. One other thing that you need to do is brush twice daily, which you already know, but you also need to work to keep your pressure light because pressure that is too heavy is bad for your gums. You already know how important flossing is in terms of caring for your mouth. You have no doubt been told by your dentist that you need to floss at least once each day (which is good advice). Here are some of the best practices when you floss your teeth. Obviously you want it to be effective and you need to make sure that you don't cause any damage to your gums as you do it. Gentleness is required as you move the floss back and forth after putting it between your teeth. Do not force the floss under your gum line, but rather just slide it up and down the tooth. To make sure you've correctly oriented the floss, pull it around the edges of each tooth as you floss it.

One of the unfortunate things about modern life in the Western World is that we eat lots of foods that are high in sugar. There are also lots of people who consume far more sugar than they should. We get more cavities because we are always forcing our teeth to deal with more sugar than they should ever have to deal with. It is important, then, for us to work hard to consume less sugar by choosing snacks that don't contain it. Working a few in where you can is the least you can do. Also, you should rinse your mouth out with water after you eat candy or any sugary foods. It is also a good idea to chew only sugarless gum (or do both things). There is so much that you can do to lower the frequency of cavities and other serious dental conditions. Just about the most important thing that you can do for yourself is to create a healthy habit for your mouth care. After you've built a solid habit for your oral health care, you can do quite a lot to keep your teeth in good condition.
