- 1). Pile at least 6 inches of mulch around the perimeter of the tree. The mound of mulch should touch the bark on the tree's trunk to encourage rot and pests.
- 2). Weaken the tree further by pruning it improperly. With pruning shears, cut off all of the tree's outer branches, twigs and leaves. This allows water to leak out of the branch stubs, causing the tree to die.
- 3). Seal the pruned areas of the tree with paint to trap in moisture, which encourages pests and slows healing. Any type or brand of paint works.
- 4). Examine the tree after one month for indications of its death. The tree is dead if its trunk is spongy, bark is brittle and limbs are falling off. If the tree is dead, no further actions are required. Otherwise, proceed with more severe treatment.
- 5). Slice vertical cuts downward along the circumference of the tree's trunk using an ax. Space the cuts about 3 inches apart. These cuts provide reservoirs for injecting herbicides.
- 6). Spray phenoxy herbicide into each incision, applying the amount of liquid directed by the herbicide manufacturer. Wear long-sleeved clothing and gloves when applying the herbicide.
- 7). Wait for the tree to die completely.
