- 1). Visit your local home improvement store and obtain some paint sample cards of exterior paints. Get as many card samples as you want, you can narrow down your choices later.
- 2). Stand in your yard or at the curb in front of your home and take a picture of your house in bright daylight. Stand far enough back to include the entire house, then take pictures of different angles and up close.
- 3). Upload the pictures of the home or building to your computer and use a photo editing software that you already have or one you find on the Internet to change the colors of your house to match closely with the shades of the paint sample cards you have; do this simply by painting over the existing color of the house with your digital paint brush on your editing software. Discard the sample cards that you do not like as you digitally try them.
- 4). Print large photos of the color schemes you like the most. Remember that you'll probably need three colors: one for the siding of the home, one for trim, and one for shutters and doors.
- 5). Stand where you took the picture of the structure and hold the picture. Compare your new color schemes to the area around the structure. Continue to narrow down your choices, if possible.
- 6). Purchase small sample cans of your favorite colors and paint a portion of the back of you house, to get an idea of how the colors will look when exposed to different lights. Examine how each color scheme looks at dawn, dusk, and noon.
- 7). Using a ladder, paintbrushes and a exterior paint sprayer, paint the exterior of the building. Remember to use primer first, and cover edges with painter's tape to cover doors, shutters, and trimmings that will be painted in different colors.
