- Before starting the iPod restore, you should make sure that you are using the most current version of iTunes. Visit apple.com/itunes to check for an available update. If a software update is available download it, then follow on-screen prompts to install. You may have to restart your computer when the installation is complete.
- If you have not created a backup of the information on your iPod, you can still do so, even without the pass code. Start iTunes, then connect your iPod as you normally would. Click the "Summary" tab in the iTunes window, then "Restore" and follow on screen prompts. When asked, make sure that you have iTunes "Create a backup now." If you skip this step, you may lose some of the information stored on your iPod.
- If you have already created a backup and are sure that you have not added any important information to your iPod since, you can choose to restore from a previous backup. This option could also come in handy if you feel that your iPod has become cluttered with unnecessary information. Right-click (control click for Mac users) your iPod in the devices tab in the iTunes window and select "Restore from Backup." Choose a backup file from the screen that appears, click "OK" and do not disconnect your iPod until the restore is complete.
- If you have not created a backup and are unconcerned about losing data and you may have downloaded directly with your iPods Wi-Fi connection, you can restore from your iTunes summary instead. This will send an exact copy of your iTunes library to your iPod. Click "Restore" in the iTunes "Summary" tab and choose "Restore from Summary." Do not disconnect your iPod until you are told it is safe to do so.
