Phoenix is known worldwide for its beautiful sunsets. As local photographers know, there are a number of great spots in and around Phoenix where you can take beautiful sunset shots. Below I'll list the top 5.
1) Squaw Peak Park, which is also called Piestewa Peak Park, is in the centre of Phoenix. It has a number of great locations from which to shoot spectacular sunsets. You need not go to the top of the peaks to get the best shots however. There are a number of trails around the park that provide good vistas for taking great pictures. You can walk around the park easily without the hindrance of structures invading the frame of your shots.
2) If you prefer an urban setting, then you can get great views from the Mill Avenue Bridge in downtown Tempe. The views from this bridge are not totally devoid of urban structures, but they are still an excellent source of pictures. There is one Mill Avenue bridge that carries northbound traffic and there is one that carries southbound traffic. The perspective from the northbound bridge overlooking the other bridge will give you a great view of the sunset in the backdrop. You might even catch a glimpse of a train or a plane in the background. You can park near the Marquee club, further to the north from both of the bridges. You will also find a lot of free parking space near the lake. From there, you can easily walk up to the bridge.
3) If you would like to stay in a resort for a great sunset view, the Four Seasons Resort, located 1000 feet above downtown Phoenix, is the place to be. The view of the city below, and of Pinnacle Peak in the background, would make a great shot from the resort. The Hermosa Inn is also a great place to get a good sunset view. You can sit on the patio, surrounded by mountains and the desert, and get a great view of the setting sun.
4) Camelback Mountain and South Mountain are also prime locations for adventurous photographers. Camelback Mountain is a wonderful geological feature that must be included in any sunset scenery. You can best find this unique Phoenix wonder down near Echo Trail, at its base. You can also get sunset views from the country's biggest municipal park, the South Mountain Preserve, which has more than 17,000 acres. Arizona Grand Resort has rides that cost $65 a person, which will take you towards the setting sun over South Mountain.
5) Piestewa Peak has a number of picnic areas that are great spots to catch a glimpse of a beautiful sunset. Located in the Dreamy Draw area, these are some of the most beautiful mountains in Arizona. Piestewa Peak is always a contender for the best sunset locations in the valley.
