Motivation by any definition refers to that drive or force that compels you to perform a particular task or to move forward towards a particular goal. Motivation comes in two major forms, one is preventative motivation and the other is goal oriented motivation.
Preventative Motivation
The name of this category may sound confusing at first but the following description and example will help you to understand its true meaning. There are some persons with a strong drive to do certain things, not because it is going to lead them to that ultimate goal, but because if they do not do it, the out come will be unpleasant. This form of motivation happens in cases when there are certain things that you would rather not do, but if you do not do it, the result of that choice would not benefit you in any way. The best example would for those persons with the dead end jobs, which are accompanied with an insensitive boss and topped off with low income. It is no mystery to say that no one would like to be stuck in this position, but the fact is that there are many persons who get up everyday religiously and arrive at these jobs in their best work attire, they arrive on time and they do their job well. The reason they do this is not because they enjoy the mediocrity, but because they have bills to pay and a family to take care of. Those bills and that family are their motivation, its the will and drive that forces them out of the bed each morning and provides with the power to make it through the day and then to get up and do it all over again the following day.
In essence, the motivation is not to go to work, but to take care of the family and if they do not go, things could get really sticky at home, so they are motivated to go to work to prevent an bad situation at home. Thus, preventative Motivation.
Goal oriented Motivation
Goal oriented motivation is the type that most people are familiar with, this is where you start out with a set objective in mind and you keep at it until it is within your reach. An example can be given for persons who are looking to lose weight, they took out that beautiful outfit that is just a tad too tight and they have already decided that they want to wear that particular outfit to the function at the end of next month. The next step is to develop and exercise regime and start dieting if necessary and everyday, a routine is followed because each day is one step closer to that moment of reckoning and the goal is to look stunning in that new out fit. Therefore the light at the end of the tunnel is what keeps you going. Both types of Motivation will intertwine on a regular basis, because the person that is trying to lose weight to fit into the outfit may also be trying to prevent an embarrassing moment if they do not fit into it properly and the employee may also be working hard to save enough money for a family vacation or something else.
