- 1). Open Adobe InDesign CS4.
- 2). Click "File," then "New" and then "Document." This will open the New Document dialogue window. Set the number of pages to 3 and the page size and margins to the desired measurements while leaving all other settings at the default values.
- 3). Click the "Create New Style" icon on the Paragraph Styles palette, then double-click the "Paragraph Style 1" entry that appears on the palette to open the Paragraph Style Options window. Name the style, such as "Body Text," then set the font face, size and any other settings you want to set. Click "OK" to save the style, then repeat this step for any other styles you want to create.
- 4). Double-click "A-Master" on the Pages palette to show the master page for the document. Click the Type Tool on the Tools palette, then draw a text box for the page number on the right hand page. Page numbers usually appear at the bottom of pages, but you can place it where you want.
- 5). Click inside the text box using the Type Tool, then click "Type," "Insert Special Character," "Markers" and then "Current Page Number." Highlight the letter that appears, then click the style you created for page numbers on the Paragraph Styles palette.
- 6). Draw any other text boxes for items you want to appear on the first page of each chapter, such as chapter headers, etc., and set the paragraph style for each item.
- 7). Right-click on the top half of the Pages palette and click "New Master." Click "OK" on the New Master window that appears, then double-click "B-Master." Create text boxes for page numbers. Create text boxes for the novel's name at the top of the left hand page and for the author's name at the top of the right hand page.
- 8). Right-click on the bottom half of the Pages palette, then click "Apply Master to Pages..." to open the Apply Master window. Select "A-Master" for Apply Master, then type 1 in the To Pages field and click "OK." Repeat this process for pages 2 and 3, using "B-Master" and typing "2-3" in the To Pages field.
- 9). Click "File," then "Save As" to open the Save As window. Type "chapter template" for the filename, then click "InDesign CS4 template" on the format menu. Click "Save."
- 1). Create separate word processing files for each chapter if you haven't already done so, saving each as "Chapter 1," "Chapter 2," etc.
- 2). Double-click the chapters template file you created to open an untitled document. Click "Layout," then "Numbering & Section Options..." to open the Numbering & Section Options window. Type the chapter number in the Section Marker field, then click "OK." For Chapter 1, select the "Start Page Numbering at" option, and type 1 in the field. For all other chapter, select "Automatic Page Numbering."
- 3). Click "File," then "Place," browse to your word processing file for your first chapter, click the file and then click "Open." On the first page of the chapter, press and hold the "Shift" key, then click where you want the text to begin. InDesign will automatically flow the text onto the pages, adding more pages as needed.
- 4). Click the Type Tool, click inside a body text box, click "Edit" and then "Select All." Click your body text style on the Paragraph Styles palette to set your book text to your desired style. Edit the layout if needed and add any other items to the pages you want, such as quote boxes, pictures, diagrams, etc.
- 5). Click "File," then "Save" and name the file as "Chapter 1." Repeat this process for each chapter.
- 6). Create any other pages or sections for your book, such as a title page, foreword, acknowledgement, etc., as individual InDesign files.
- 1). Click "File," then "New," then "Book." This will open the New Book window. Type a filename for the book in the Save As box, then click "Save." This will create a new palette in the InDesign workspace.
- 2). Click the "Add documents" icon at the bottom of the Book palette. This will open the Add Documents window. Press and hold the "Shift" key, then click all of your chapter InDesign files. Click "Open." Each chapter will appear as an entry on the Book palette.
- 3). Add you title page, foreword, etc., to the palette using the same process. Drag each entry on the palette to put the sections and chapters in the proper order. Be sure Chapter 1 page numbering begins as 1 in the Numbering & Section Options in that file.
- 4). Click the "Save the book" icon at the bottom of the Book palette.
