Snooker demands absolute precision under immense pressure; a steady hand and accurate aim is vital. The greatest champions have mastered the skill and achieved many prestigious titles.
The Great Champions Of World Snooker
Some leading names in the world of snooker include:
⢠Stephen Hendry - Who holds 7 titles to his name, which is the current record.
⢠Steve Davis - Reigned during the 1980s and has six world titles to his name.
⢠Alex "The Hurricane" Higgins - A 1972 and 1982 world champion who left an impressive legacy behind following his passing in 2010.
⢠Ronnie O'Sullivan - A charismatic figure who has had many career highs and lows, he currently has 5 world titles to his name.
A History Of Champions: Who Is The Greatest?
A recent survey revealed that 20% of respondents chose Ronnie O'Sullivan as the greatest snooker player of all time.
O'Sullivan recently claimed the Welsh Open title in March and appeared confident with his game as he prepared for the World Snooker Championship which began on the April 19th. O'Sullivan already has 5 world championship titles to his name and has been a dynamic driving force in snooker in recent years. This year's Welsh Open final saw O'Sullivan achieve his 12th 147 break, which is a new record.*
19% of survey participants said Steve Davis was the greatest snooker player of all time. O'Sullivan is currently one world title away from matching Davis' record. According to the survey, the majority of over 40s chose Davis as the greatest snooker player showing he was popular with mature audiences. O'Sullivan, however, received 61% of the under 40s vote showing his recent dominance of the sport was popular with current spectators.
Although Stephen Hendry holds the current world title record with 7 titles to his name, he received just 10% of panellists' votes. O'Sullivan is hot on the heels of Hendry's record and will be just one title away if he claims the World Snooker Championship this year.
17% of participants chose the late great Alex Higgins as their greatest player of all time. 19% of female participants chose Higgins as the greatest player, making him the most popular choice with women on this occasion. O'Sullivan likens himself to Higgins "I'm more like Alex Higgins. He was a big occasion player. We are similar. We are too temperamental to be machines. I have tried to become one but it's impossible when you're not made that way."*
Although O'Sullivan may be respondents' favourite on this occasion, O'Sullivan himself says he does not compare to current record holder, Hendry: "It's still Stephen Hendry for me, he is the greatest player. Not just for his game, but for his bottle. There will never be another Hendry... I guess I have my little place in history but maybe that is more alongside the likes of Higgins than the other guys"*
