- 1). Determine the text needed for lettering. Once this is together, bring it into a vector-based program such as Illustrator. Select a typeface, or one that is close to the look you would like to create. Making sure the space between the letters, the kerning, and the size of the font is how you would like it. Highlight the text and create outlines by clicking on the word 'Type' on the top bar and scroll down to 'Create Outlines.'
- 2). Using the open arrow in Illustrator, click on the outlined text. Once the text is highlighted, you will see dots or points outlining the letter. Click directly on the point and hold while dragging the point. This will allow you to alter the shape. Use the pen tool to add or subtract points and begin to change the curvature and shape of the letters.
- 3). Once the letters are designed, you can upload or email your files to a sign maker. The sign maker will input the vector files into a machine and create your vinyl lettering. Speak to your local sign supply store about its requirements for file formats and version prior to beginning your design.
- 4). Many sign stores have the option to design your lettering online. This works for basic letters, but does not allow you to alter the font in the same way as using a computer program will.
