How to Make a Plush Block

    • 1). Measure and cut out six 7-inch squares of fabric to make a 6-inch cube. The squares are 1 inch longer and wider than the desired length of the cube so they have a 1/2-inch seam allowance on all sides.

    • 2). Lay one piece of material face-up on the table. Place a second square on top of the first, right-side down, so the decorative side of each piece is touching.

    • 3). Sew vertically up the right side of the squares, 1/2 inch from the raw edge.

    • 4). Unfold the two squares, now a 13-inch-long and 7-inch-wide rectangle. Spread the rectangle right-side up on the table.

    • 5). Place a square on the right edge of one of the rectangle, right-side down, so it is aligned with the raw edge. Sew vertically 1/2 inch from the right edge.

    • 6). Unfold the rectangle formed by the three squares.

    • 7). Make a second three-square-long rectangle with the remaining pieces.

    • 8). Lay one rectangle horizontally on the table, right-side up. Place the second rectangle vertically on top of the first, right-side down, so the lowest square of the vertical rectangle overlaps the middle square of the horizontal rectangle.

    • 9). Sew along the bottom where the two squares meet, 1/2 inch from the edge. Fold the vertical rectangle down to reveal a T-shaped piece. Keep the material right-side up.

    • 10

Look at the upper right side of the T. Find the 90-degree notch formed by the vertical and horizontal lengths. Isolate the two raw edges: the horizontal bottom edge of the square that forms the right arm of the T and the right edge of the square, second from the top in the vertical column.

    • 11

Fold the right corner of the T down so the horizontal edge overlaps the vertical edge. Sew a straight line across the material, 1/2 inch from the raw edge. This seam forms one corner of the cube.

    • 12

Observe the fabric; the square that previously formed the upper right arm of the T will overlap the vertical column of squares forming a flap. Look for the raw horizontal edge of this flap. This raw edge aligns with the upper edge of the second square from the bottom of the vertical column.

    • 13

Pinch the left corner of the raw edge, and pull it to the right so it overlaps the right edge of the second square from the bottom of the vertical column. Sew along the edges, 1/2 inch from the right side. This forms another corner; the material may not lay flat, as the top of the T is folded over the vertical column.

    • 14

Find the lowest square in the vertical column. Locate the notch formed by the right edge of this square and the flap of the material. Align the right edge of this square with the edge of the flap of the material, and sew along the edge, leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance.

    • 15

Find the end of the previous seam, and locate the notch that opens toward the left arm of the T. Isolate the two raw edges that form the sides of the notch. Overlap the raw edges, and sew a seam with a 1/2-inch seam allowance.

    • 16

Turn the form so it resembles a box with a hinged lid; there will be three raw edges on the top of the box and the lid.

    • 17

Lower the lid of the box so the raw edges meet and the cube is formed. Pin the material in place.

    • 18

Sew along two of the raw edges, 1/2 inch from the edge of the material; it does not matter which edges you sew, but sewing along consecutive edges saves the trouble of making two separate seams. One side of the box will be open.

    • 19

Sew along part of the open side, leaving a gap at least 1-inch long.

    • 20

Invert the casing through the gap.

    • 21

Stuff the casing to fill out the cube shape.

    • 22

Tuck the raw edges of the opening inside of the cube. Stitch the material closed by hand.
