- 1). Dampen the inside of the wheelbarrow or large tub and add the sand. Pour in half of the Portland cement. Use the hoe to thoroughly mix the sand and cement.
- 2). Dip the hoe in water then pour a bucketful of water into the wheelbarrow or tub and move the hoe back and forth in the mixture until the water is absorbed.
- 3). Continue to add water and mix until the mortar is moist. If you create a crease in the surface with the side of the hoe, the cement should just barely hold the shape of the crease. Rinse the hoe off.
- 4). Lay down drop cloths to catch any mortar that drops off your trowel. Skip this step if neatness isn't necessary.
- 5). Mist the cinder blocks with water. Do this a section at a time as your work your way along the wall.
- 6). Begin at one end of the wall. Dampen your trowel and scoop it into the mortar. Start at the bottom of the wall and spread the mortar upward for about 2 feet. Use gentle pressure on the trowel to press the mortar into the holes in the cinder blocks as you work.
- 7). Continue to apply the mortar, overlapping the edges. Use a small trowel to do detail work around windows and doors.
- 8). Create a smooth finish by dipping the trowel in water and smoothing the damp mortar.
- 9). Touch up small areas at the bottom of the wall or spots that you missed by wetting the area and applying the mortar.
