- 1). Turn off the power to the circuit that will be used to power the new light fixture at the main power panel.
- 2). Decide where the new electrical box will go in the ceiling. Mark the spot and use the drywall saw to cut a hole in the ceiling for the new electrical box. The hole should be just large enough for the new electrical box to to sit flush with the ceiling drywall.
- 3). Secure the electrical box to a ceiling joist using screws. Go up into the attic and locate the new box. Knock out one of the knockouts on the side of the electrical box. This provides a path into the box for the new Romex wire.
- 4). Run about 6 inches of Romex wire into the new electrical box. Go back down stairs and strip 1/2 of an inch of insulation from the black and white wires of the Romex wire.
- 5). Connect the black wire of the pull string light fixture to the black wire of the new Romex wire. Connect the white wire of the light fixture to the white wire of the new Romex wire. If a ground wire is present, connect it also. Secure each splice with a plastic twist cap (wire nut).
- 6). Secure the light fixture to the electrical box using the screws that came with the light kit.
- 7). Go back up into the attic and run the other end of the new Romex wire over to the electrical box that will supply power to the new light fixture. Run the Romex into the electrical box. Make sure this is the electrical box that you cut the power off to.
- 8). Access the electrical box and remove the existing plastic twist caps. Strip 1/2 of an inch of insulation from the black and white wires of the new Romex wire. Connect the black wire of the new Romex wire to the existing black wire splice in the electrical box. Connect the white wire of the new Romex wire to the existing white wire splice in the electrical box. Secure each splice with new plastic twist caps.
- 9). Turn the power back on and test the new light.
