- 1). Practice creating and drawing an inlay design on a piece of paper using a pencil and a ruler (if a straight edge is needed.) Use an eraser to help you rework the design until you are satisfied.
- 2). Draw the design you created in step 1 onto your wood-grain papers. You may want to juxtapose light and dark grain papers next to each other in your design for a dramatic effect.
- 3). Cut out your inlay design from the wood-grained papers and discard the scraps.
- 4). Arrange the wood-grain paper cutouts on top of your wooden object back into their original design.
- 5). Spread out the craft glue evenly onto the back of one cutout at a time. You can use your fingers or a cotton swab to spread the glue.
- 6). Affix each piece one at a time to the wooden object. Smooth out any bubbles or ripples with your fingers. Allow to dry.
- 7). Examine the piece to see if any edges have come unglued. Add more glue to the edges by sliding a toothpick underneath and applying pressure to the area with your fingers. Allow to dry again.
- 8). Apply varnish evenly to the top of your design using a sponge brush. Allow to completely dry between coats.
- 9). Repeat step 8 at least five more times.
