- 1). Line up four steps behind the offensive line. The play will be directed up the middle on either side of the center. As a running back, you can line up on either side of the center depending on the coach's play call.
- 2). Note the location of your fullback. He is your lead blocker. He is lined up two to three steps behind the offensive line. Keep him in your sights. When the ball is snapped, there will be a wild scrum. If you lose track of your fullback in the crowd, you won't be able to take advantage of the hole he creates for you in the defensive line.
- 3). Take the handoff. Run up alongside the quarterback as soon as he takes the snap from center. He will stuff the ball into your gut. Cover the ball with both arms. This protects it from defensive players who want to strip it loose and create a fumble.
- 4). Lower your head and pump your legs. Follow the fullback into the crowd of bodies. You are likely to crash into his back, but that's all right. Continue to push forward until the necessary yardage is gained.
