Have you ever spent many months planning that one special event, only to have it completely ruined by someone that cost you thousands of dollars just to be there to capture those special moments?
If not, you are very lucky. I know alot of people that have had a bad experience (some more than others) when hiring a photographer. I live in the metro Detroit area, and like most larger cities, we have thousands of photographers in Detroit. And just like everything else, some are better than others.
This article is intended to provide you with some very important questions you must ask any photographer before hiring him/her for that next special event.
Truth be told, just about everyone has a family member or friend that dabbles in photogrpahy and is more than willing to snap a few pictures for you, but there are those special occassions where you need the expertise of a professional photographer to ensure those precious moments are captured perfectly forever.
Below are 3 very important questions to ask before hiring a photographer in Detroit (or any city):
1. Will you personally be the photographer at my event, or will someone else be covering it? This is very important because you want to determine if there is a connection between you and your photographer (i.e. are you both on the same wave length). You can only truely determine this by talking with this person and viewing their portfolio of work.
2. Are you a full time photographer? It's important to know whether you are dealing with a professional full time photographer that does this for a living, or an amateur photographer that does this on the side for a few extra dollars. You are spending way too much money to trust your precious event on someone that may not have the experience or finesse of a licensed professional photographer.
3. Are you licensed and/or do you belong to any professional photography organizations? Most if not all professional photographers will belong to at least 1 organization. Some organizations to look for are the Professional Photographers of America (PPA) or Photographic Society of America (PSA). They should be an active member of at least one.

Notice I did not list the question, "Can I see your portfolio of work"? This is a given. When hiring a photographer in Detroit, you must do this. Don't even waste your time or money on someone that does not have a portfolio.
