How to Flatten & Dry Carnation Flowers

    • 1). Pick carnations at the peak of their bloom -- when they are fully open, but before they begin to wilt.

    • 2). Lay your flowers on a sheet of wax paper on a level, sturdy surface. Do not allow the flowers to touch or overlap each other. Then, lay another sheet of wax paper over the flowers. Stack several bricks on top of your flowers and press down to ensure that they are well flattened.

    • 3). Remove the flattened flowers from under the bricks after about two days. They are now ready for drying.

    • 4). Pour about 2 inches of silica gel into the bottom of a glass jar that you can seal tightly, such as a Mason jar. Spread one layer of flattened carnation flowers on top of the gel, and then add more gel to cover them completely. Repeat the addition of flowers and gel in layers until the jar is full, and then seal it tightly.

    • 5). Allow the carnation flowers to remain in the silica gel for several days, and then remove them as dried flowers for use in craft projects or dried arrangements.
