- 1). Access the Internet and a word search website. Myriad sites exist that will generate a word search puzzle for you. Try ArmoredPenguin.com, DiscoveryEducation.com, SuperKids.com or AtoZTeacherStuff.com. A simple Web search will list several more options.
- 2). Decide on a theme for your word search puzzle. Choose related words (games, food, animals), events (baseball games, holidays, countries) or random words. Make a puzzle that lists the names of family members to pass out at a family reunion.
- 3). Enter your words and title your puzzle. In the designated fields on the webpage, list the words you would like to have hidden in your word search puzzle, then title it accordingly. Follow the directions on each site--some require you to list one word per line, some request words be separated by commas or spaces, and still others will provide a grid for your words.
- 4). Choose your settings. Some word search websites allow you to choose font type and size, color and whether you want your puzzle to use upper-case letters, lower-case or a mixture. Decide where to place your word list, or whether to show a word list at all. Determine how many rows and columns you want your word search puzzle to have, whether you want words to read forward, backward, horizontally, vertically, diagonally or in some combination thereof. Some word search generators allow you to add in difficulty factors, such as replacing all the vowels with a dot, or to make puzzles easier for kids by adding in a grid or making all the words read forward.
- 5). Create your puzzle. Click the button beneath your options to generate your puzzle. Larger puzzles will take longer to create. PDF files will take longer than HTML. On ArmoredPenguin.com you can save your puzzle on the website and even open it to the public.
- 6). Proofread and print your word search puzzle. Look it over carefully for inappropriate random combinations of letters, either on your monitor or by printing out one copy. If you need to, go back and modify your puzzle. And don't forget to print out the solution if the website provides that option.
