- In order to flip a pillowtop mattress, you must purchase a double pillowtop model. This means that there must be a cushion sewn onto the top of your mattress and onto the bottom. In other words, each side of the mattress should look identical.
No-flip models that only have the pillowtop on one side are quickly replacing double pillowtop mattresses, but they do still exist.
Flip your double pillowtop about once per month over the first six months you own the mattress to even the wear. After that, flipping it at the beginning of each season or even twice per year should be sufficient. - Do not flip a pillowtop mattress if it is a no-flip variety. As the name would indicate, a no-flip mattress does not require flipping. These mattresses will have the pillow cushion sewn on one side, but the other will likely be made of a non-skid material that should not be slept on.
Mattresses manufactured as no-flip claim to have comparable durability to flippable mattresses. They require only that they be rotated 180 degrees every few months as opposed to being flipped over.
Rotate your mattress regularly if it cannot be flipped. The soft pillowtop is more likely to show body impressions and become uncomfortable than firmer versions. - When the time comes to flip your mattress, you should not try to do it alone. Get a partner to help you to avoid damaging the mattress, other items in the room or yourself. Mattresses are heavy, especially those queen-size and larger, and they are bulky and awkward to move.
Start by turning the mattress sideways on top of the foundation. With the ends now hanging off the sides of the bed, stand the mattress up on one side and drop it down on the other side. Slide the mattress back around in the proper direction and replace the linens.
