The films of Stephen King.

Stephen King's first horror novel was published in 1973, and was about a young girl with psychic powers and an overbearing mother. The book was called Carrie, and four years after it was released it was made into a movie starring Sissy Spacek and John Travolta. Since the popularity of King's first novel and movie, many of his other works have been turned into extremely popular horror movies.

One of the most well known of King's work is The Shining. The movie adaptation of The Shining was released in 1980 and tells the story of a family who look after a haunted hotel for the winter. Unfortunately the ghosts in the hotel start to overpower the family's father and he begins to transform into an angry and hostile character. The family's young son Danny is also able to sense the presence of the ghosts, as he has psychic powers. The movie stars Jack Nicholson and often appears in countdowns of the scariest movies ever.

Another extremely popular adaptation is the story of It. Due to the large size of the novel; It was released as a TV mini-series and shown in two parts. The story runs on two different time lines, following a group of seven children when they are young and then when they are reunited when they are older. The group of seven, called The Losers, are fighting against an evil force in the town of Derry, which is causing young children to go missing. After thinking they have destroyed It when they are younger, they are forced to return to their home town years later to face the monster again. This movie was so popular that it is due to be remade in 2011 to bring it up to date for a modern audience.

A final example of King's movie work is the movie Misery. Misery follows a writer called Paul Sheldon who writes books based around the character of Misery. After crashing his car in the snow, he is rescued by Annie Wilkes, who just happened to be his biggest fan. When she learns he is planning to kill Misery off in his latest book, she decided to hold him prisoner until he re-writes the story. Paul spends most of the movie trying to escape from Annie's clutches, but when she finds out he's been plotting against her, we get one of the most iconic horror scenes ever, which involves a large hammer and Paul's ankles.

If you like horror movies, then why not check out what movies are showing on the Sky movie channels. With plenty to chose from, included dedicated horror channels, you're sure to find something that will give you the chills.
