- 1). Water both soil-grown and water-grown lucky bamboo plants with filtered tap water or rainwater if possible. The chlorine and fluoride present in most tap water can adversely effect your plant's health. Fill a container with tap water and let it sit uncovered for at least 24 hours if you do not have a water filtration system. Some of the unwanted chemicals will disperse when exposed to air.
- 2). Fill the water-grown bamboo's container each time it shrinks to about half-full. Check your soil-grown bamboo by sticking your finger about 1 inch into the soil. If the soil below the surface is dry, it is time to water.
- 3). Empty a water-grown plant's container about once a week and refill it with fresh water.
- 4). Move your lucky bamboo closer to a light source if it becomes yellow and spindly. If this does not solve the problem, feed your water-grown lucky bamboo a few drops of aquarium plant food every two or three months when you are changing water. Fertilize a soil-grown plant monthly with a standard houseplant food. Watch for signs of over-feeding, such as turning yellow. Discontinue fertilizing if yellowing occurs.
