- 1). Study the different varieties of paper textures and weight to select paper that best suits the images that you will print. Textured paper will make your image seem rougher, like burlap. Smooth-textured paper is more accommodating to images with finer details.
- 2). Consider the kind of printer you will use; how you will feed paper into the printer and the kinds of inks you will use. Determine whether your printer can accommodate heavier and more highly textured paper, either by studying the printer's documentation or experimenting with sample packs of various papers.
- 3). Check with your printer's manufacturer to find which "profiles" are bundled with your printer's drivers. The paper manufacturer also may have profiles that are best suited to the quality of paper you are using. A profile is software that helps you print consistent images with different kinds of papers and inks. Print the same image on your chosen paper at several different quality levels -- set in the driver -- to find the settings that work best for you.
- 4). Review your paper coating options. Wilhelm Imaging Research has tested the properties of various coating processes. The information gleaned by Wilhelm can help you make an informed decision on which coating will best serve the image you will print.
