College tuition can be expensive, but there are many obscure scholarships and grants out there for the right applicants. Maybe you are a Dr. Seuss fan with an offbeat writing style. Perhaps you are fanatical about fungi. Maybe you're just exceptionally tall. With some research, you may be surprised to find a scholarship award that suits you. - The "Oh the Places You'll Go" College Scholarship, based on Dr. Seuss's children's book, is a $5,000 award open to any American student under the age of 21. Applicants must demonstrate a unique creative-writing style in a 250-word essay related to Seuss's book.
- The Stuck at Prom Scholarship Contest offers awards to North American students, 14 or older, who can design and make a prom outfit entirely out of duct tape. The awards range from $500 to $3,000 and are granted based on quality of work, use of color and amount of tape used. To apply, couples must send in photos of themselves at the dance and fill in some on-line forms. Judges will select the top 10 couples, and the winners are determined through online voting.
- Tall Clubs Internatioal awards scholarships of $1,000. Female applicants must be at least 5 feet, 10 inches tall, and males must meet a minimum height requirement of 6-foot-2. Interested students must first contact their local TCI chapter (in either the U.S. or Canada).
- The Mycological Society of America offers scholarships to university students who are specializing in research related to fungi. For example, the Forest Fungal Ecology Research Award, a value of $1,000, is granted to Master's or Ph.D. students who are pursuing research on fungal communities in vulnerable ecosystems. The $1,000 Clark T. Rogerson Student Research Award funds travel expenses for undergraduate or graduate students who are conducting field work. The John W. Rippon Research Award ($500) is awarded to graduate students who are studying the medicinal properties of fungi. The $2,000 MSA Graduate Fellowship and Nama Memorial Fellowship scholarships are awarded to students with high GPAs who show potential in the field of mycology.
