- 1). Set wooden stakes around the perimeter where you want the patio to be, pounding them in with your hammer and leaving about six inches of stake above the ground. Tie twine between the stakes to mark out the perimeter.
- 2). Dig out the sod from within the patio area, using a shovel. Use a level to get the dirt as even as possible, moving it around and tamping it down as needed.
- 3). Cover the area with weed blocker, laying it in courses that overlap slightly at the edges, and cutting it as needed with a razor knife.
- 4). Cut weatherized two-by-fours with a circular saw as needed to fit around the perimeter. Stand the boards on their narrow sides so they form a box surrounding the patio.
- 5). Spread gravel over the patio area to a depth of about four inches. Make it as even and flat as possible, using your level and shovel.
- 6). Use a garden hose to saturate the gravel with water. Let it drain, then spray it again. Repeat several times to create a flat and well-packed surface.
- 7). Lay Holland pavers along one side of the patio area. Proceed to build across the area, in any configuration you want, as long as all the pavers' edges touch each other. Cover the entire area within the two-by-fours.
