How to Make Different Types of Magazine Stands

    Wood Shelf

    • 1). Decide on the height and width of the side pieces. Sketch out your design marking the height, width and depth of the shelves. Also mark the placement and any decorative features. You will later transfer this on to the pieces of wood.

    • 2). Cut each piece of wood into a basic square first and set the pieces aside that you will shape further.

    • 3). Shape the pieces of the magazine rack sides, tops and carvings on the outside if desired.

    • 4). Attach the back of the rack to the two sides with small nails checking that it is level when set on the ground.

    • 5). Drill small holes where the dowels will go and attach the shelving starting with the bottom shelf.

    • 6). Paint or decorate as desired and it's ready for use.

    Child-Sized Rack

    • 1). Design the shape you want first on paper including the number and depth of the shelves. Use the pencil and square to put the design onto the plywood, make any adjustments necessary prior to cutting the pieces.

    • 2). Cut all the pieces of wood into squares to begin with and set the pieces that have further shaping aside.

    • 3). Begin shaping the top and bottom of the side panels and the top of the back panel. Too ease the process you can shape the two side pieces at the same time.

    • 4). Assemble the pieces. This step takes more time as you want to make sure your magazine rack will not fall apart when in use. On a flat surface take a side panel and lay flat. Take the each rack piece and the bottom and place a layer of glue on the edges that will attach to the side panel. Then take the glue and make strips in the place on the side panel where you attach the other pieces. Put all the pieces in place except the final side panel.

    • 5). Attach the final side panel and set something slightly heavy on top. Let the glue set completely, usually overnight.

    • 6). Paint or decorate as you desire. Children can be a part of this step by making prints of their hands, painting and other decorations.

    • 7). Set the wheels in place using a strong double-sided tape made for projects. Your kids' rack is ready for use.
