Mexico is an incredibly diverse region, its landscape including everything from snow-covered mountain tops to dry deserts. The diverse environment supports a widely varied and abundant plant life, making Mexico home to some of the world's most beautiful and unique flowers. Many of these flowers, such as the poinsettia and the dahlia, are known worldwide. One of the most well-known Mexican flowers is the dahlia (Dahlia pinnata), notable because of its status as the official national flower. This flower has quite a history and was used by Aztecs in certain ceremonies. There are nearly 30 species of dahlia, each unique in its way. Some species grow to be a foot high, while others can reach heights of eight feet. Flowers come in an array of colors, some of the most familiar being burgundy, pink and yellow. The poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima), also known as the “Christmas plant” or “Mexican flame leaf,” is native to Mexico. In particular, it grows wild on the Pacific slopes of Mexico. The brightly colored portions of the poinsettia--usually red--are not flowers, but leaves. The plant's actual flowers are tiny, and typically are either yellow or green; they grow in the center of each cluster of leaves. - Mexipedium xerophyticum is a rare orchid that is found growing only in the Oaxaca area of Mexico. It grows in rocky areas and on cliffs, and is cultivated primarily for decorative purposes. The flowers are white, with highlights and accents in pink. As is characteristic of orchids, the flower has two petals that frame the central bud and curve outward.
- Gentian sage (Salvia patens) thrives in central Mexico and often is cultivated for its blooms, known for their bright shade of blue. The gentian sage is a perennial plant in its native habitat, but because of its sensitivity to frost, it often is cultivated as an annual in the U.S. The flower is typically in full bloom in the summer and the fall.

The Mexican sunflower (Tithonia rotundiflora), native to Mexico and central America, has red and organge blooms that resemble daisies. Leaves and the stem are covered with a thin layer of fuzz. The Mexican sunflower is one of the few plants that can produce two generations in one season. For example, a flower planted in May will bloom and drop seeds by June; those seeds will then germinate and grow into new flowers.
