Speaking to a room full of people is a jolting experience.
Being able to hold peoples attention is an adventure that just can't be explained.
Well I want to share a story with you that made me think a totally different way.
That jolt became a shock for me when I accepted a invitation to speak at a school function.
I was so excited as this was to be my biggest crowd yet.
I prepared my notes on what I wanted to speak about and went to the function.
I was backstage going over my notes when the Principle approached me to thank me for coming on such short notice.
I said that it was my pleasure as I love to speak and this is a dream come true to be able to speak to students...
Or so I thought.
There I was with this big grin on my face, when I heard some words that made my heart drop to the soles of my feet.
The Principle had said to me " Lucky for us you were bilingual".
"Huh" I said.
He said, " we were lucky to get a speaker who is bilingual.
"I'm not bilingual", I said.
"You're not.
" "No.
" Then he said that the audience was 99.
9% Hispanic.
UH-OH.
The jolt was upon me.
I had taken some Spanish tutorials but it did not prepare me for a full blown conversation in Spanish.
I could only form a few sentences through my knowledge of certain word but that was about it.
Needless to say I didn't speak that day.
I went home and compared a lot of the online Spanish tutorials.
I visited different forums and a program called Rocket Spanish kept coming up in different conversations.
I compared Rocket Spanish with other online Spanish programs and felt that it gave me the best chance of success and now I am proud to say that, less than one year later, I am fluent in Spanish because of this program.
If I had done this a year earlier I could have spoken to those students.
But it did teach me a valuable lesson.
If I had took the time to "Research" my audience (product) I would have been better prepared to deliver what I had to offer.
Instead I was faced with the dilemma of leaving, or speaking to what would be an unreceptive audience.
Sound Familiar.
Without the proper research of the product you plan to market you are doomed to an unreceptive audience.
By comparing Rocket Spanish I was able to determine the difference between "GREAT" AND "AVERAGE".
In the end..
I ended up with not only a great program, but a program that taught me what i had just gone through...
I WAS THE PROGRAMS RECEPTIVE AUDIENCE.
