Overcoming Back Pain and Bad Posture During Pregnancy

If you're expecting a baby now or have been pregnant in the past, then you know that one of the most common complaints during pregnancy is back pain.
Usually that back pain is related to poor posture; the two are interrelated and together cause some of the worst symptoms you'll experience while waiting for your baby to arrive.
Fortunately, you don't have to put up with an aching back due to bad posture.
Read over these tips for feeling good and looking even better while pregnant.
Pregnant Posture We've all seen the pregnant woman (or been her ourselves!) who stands awkwardly, hands pressed into the small of her back, and looks as if she is in pain.
This is because her center of gravity has changed due to carrying extra baby weight up front.
Chances are her knees are locked backward while her pelvis is tilted forward, her upper back is jutting out from her spine while her shoulders are rounded forward, and her head is misaligned.
It doesn't take an expert to see that this poor woman (maybe you?) has terrible posture.
It hurts just looking at her! Bad Posture = Back Pain How can anyone possibly not feel pain when their body is so clearly out of whack? The truth is, it's nearly impossible.
And when you don't feel good, your mind and body (even your looks) are adversely affected.
You may difficulty concentrating and sleeping in addition to feeling less energetic and perhaps even downright grumpy.
How to Reduce Lower Back Pain Although bad posture may be considered "normal" for pregnant women, it's not normal to simply put up with the resulting lower back pain, general body aches and stressed joints.
Fortunately, you don't have to.
The first thing to address is your posture.
It's very important to make a conscious effort to sit and stand straight.
Yes, it will be difficult because your natural tendency is to allow your shoulders to round forward and your lower back to invert into the shape of an exaggerated "S".
But do your best to tuck your pelvis under and pull your shoulders back into alignment with your spine - the way your body is meant to function at its best.
Strengthening your core is a good way to help your posture become better.
Contracting your abdominal muscles helps your pelvis to get centered and consequently bring your neck and shoulders back into their proper position.
Ask your doctor for exercises you can do to strengthen your core while pregnant.
These days there are also revolutionary new garments being manufactured that bring your body into proper posture automatically, without conscious thought.
For the pregnant woman suffering from lower back pain, these bodysuits could be a real blessing because they'll keep her balanced, symmetrical, and above all pain free.
It's not always easy to maintain good posture, especially when you are pregnant.
But by focusing on keeping your back in alignment, you will likely eliminate the pain and discomfort that comes from bearing extra weight in your abdominal area.
Just because you're expecting doesn't mean you must endure lower back pain caused by improper posture.
Feel great and look even better when you keep your neck, back and spine are properly aligned.
