- 1). Put on a pair of work gloves and a long-sleeved shirt before harvesting velvet beans. Tuck the cuffs of the shirt inside the glove to protect your wrists.
- 2). Grab the velvet bean pods and bend them sideways to expose the stems. Snip through the stems with a pair of bypass shears or large scissors. Gather the pods in a large basket or sack.
- 3). Husk the velvet beans outdoors so the irritating hairs do not get on the carpet or furniture indoors. Pour the bean pods on the ground.
- 4). Score each velvet bean pod along the edge using a paring knife. Stick the tip of the blade inside the pod and pry it open. Pour the velvet beans into a colander. Discard the husks in a green waste bin.
- 5). Run water from a garden hose over the velvet beans to rinse away any irritating hairs that might have gotten on them. Rinse for five to 10 minutes.
- 6). Spread the velvet beans between two layers of paper towels to dry them off. Let them dry for 15 to 20 minutes.
- 7). Gather the clean velvet beans into a sealable plastic storage container. Seal the lid. Puncture the lid once or twice with the paring knife to provide ventilation. Store the velvet beans in the container for up to one year.
