- 1). Gather up all the materials you have around the house that could be used for a game. You can include balls, nets, poles, as well as a water hose to come up with a perfect and original summer game.
- 2). Think about games that already exist and add a twist to them. If you have a basketball and a hoop, as well as a pair of skates, you can play skate-basketball. You can also figure out a game that involves that yard hose of yours by taking a game like limbo, which only requires some music and a long pole, and adding a little bit of water to create Water Limbo; simply splash the players with water as they limbo under the pole. Whatever you choose, think creatively.
- 3). Come up with rules that make the game different from other games. If you have a badminton set, you can make it more challenging by limiting the movements players can make, such as making them stand on only one foot for the entirety of the game. With a game like horseshoes, have the players spin around first before they throw their horseshoes at the target. The more rules you add to a game, the more original it becomes.
- 4). Add to your typical relay race some strange new ideas to keep things interesting. For instance, instead of just running from Point A to Point B, you can make your players bounce a birdie on a badminton racket while they race, or have them balance a water balloon on their heads as they try to make it back to their team to win the game. Another interesting idea is to have your players balance an egg on a spoon as they race towards their destinations and have other players on the sidelines try to knock the egg off of the spoon by spraying water from water guns.
- 5). Combine games together to form one unique game. For instance, you can take a game like Tag and infuse elements of a scavenger hunt to create a Scavenger Tag game. While a player is "It," all other players must try to find items around the backyard to save themselves from "It" if they are found. If "It" tags them when they hold a particular item, "It" has to take on a handicap (e.g., becoming blindfolded, having to hop on one leg or having his hands tied behind his back) for each player he tags that holds a special object. This makes "It" want to find the players quickly before they find the items in the yard. Combining two or more games you like will surely be interesting; use trial and error to see which ideas work.
