- Harvest the seed capsules in the fall. Wait until the capsules begin to split to ensure that the seeds are fully ripe, and keep the seeds dry until you are ready to plant them.
- Hibiscus seeds have a hard outer shell that slows germination. For faster germination, sand the outer shells lightly with sandpaper or soak them in warm water for a day or two before planting.
- Seeds started indoors may flower in their first season. For best results, provide artificial light and bottom heat. You may also plant the seeds directly outdoors. In cool climates, scatter the seeds outdoors in fall for germination in spring. In warm climates, wait until the soil has warmed completely and there is no danger of frost.
